The underlying principle of touch key operation usually involves changes in electrical capacitance or resistance. In capacitive touch screens, the surface is coated with a transparent conductive material. When a conductive object, like a human finger, touches the screen, it alters the capacitance at that point, and the device's controller detects this change. Resistive touch screens, on the other hand, have two conductive layers separated by a small gap. When pressure is applied, these layers make contact, completing a circuit and registering the touch.
