Gelakt is a term used to describe a surface that has been coated with lacquer or varnish, forming a hard, protective film that often provides a smooth, glossy appearance. The word is commonly applied to wood, metal and certain types of plastic, with furniture, cabinetry, flooring, musical instruments and automotive surfaces among typical examples.

Preparation and application involve cleaning the surface, sanding to create adhesion, and applying a primer or sealer if needed. Lacquer is usually applied in multiple thin coats by spraying, brushing, or dipping, with light sanding between coats to remove dust and improve adhesion. Drying and curing times depend on the formulation, climate, and coating thickness.

Different types of lacquers are used for gelakt surfaces. Solvent-based lacquers include nitrocellulose and polyurethane varieties, while water-based lacquers are increasingly common due to lower odor and reduced VOC emissions. Finishes range from hoogglans (high gloss) to satin or matte. Nitrocellulose lacquers dry quickly and yield a hard film, whereas polyurethane lacquers tend to offer greater chemical and abrasion resistance. Water-based lacquers provide a more environmentally friendly option with comparable aesthetics.

Applications and benefits: gelakte surfaces are prized for their color depth, smooth feel, and ease of cleaning. They offer good protection against moisture and wear but can be susceptible to chipping or cracking from heavy impact or improper preparation. Proper maintenance and timely re-coating extend the life of the finish.

Care and safety: cleaning should use non-abrasive, mild cleaners; avoid aggressive solvents that can soften the finish. Ventilation is important during application, and disposal of lacquer waste should follow local regulations due to VOC content.
