Cracking is a term used in several disciplines to denote the act of breaking something larger into smaller parts or circumventing protective barriers. The common thread is disruption of a structure that resists breakdown under ordinary conditions.

In petrochemistry, cracking refers to converting large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more valuable ones. Thermal cracking uses high temperatures to break carbon–carbon bonds, while catalytic cracking employs catalysts to lower energy barriers and increase selectivity. Steam cracking is used to produce light olefins such as ethylene; fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is a central refinery process that converts heavy fractions into gasoline and other products. Cracking helps adjust product mix to demand and increases yield of high-value fuels and chemicals.

In materials science, cracking describes the growth of cracks in solids under stress. It can begin with a flaw and propagate by brittle fracture or, in metals, through fatigue under cyclic loading. Fracture mechanics studies crack initiation, growth rate, and the influence of stress intensity factors, crack-tip plasticity, and environmental conditions. Mitigation strategies include improving material toughness, reducing flaw sizes through inspection, and controlling stress via design, processing, and heat treatment.

In information security, cracking denotes attempts to defeat authentication, copy protection, or encryption. Common forms include password cracking using brute force or dictionary attacks, and, in some contexts, attempts to defeat digital rights management. While some cracking is performed in controlled security testing, much of it is illegal or unethical when used to steal data or bypass protections. Defenses include strong, unique passwords, salted hashing, rate limiting, multi-factor authentication, and robust access controls.

Across fields, cracking embodies disruption—whether refining fuels, assessing structural integrity, or probing digital defenses.
