Before recoating, an assessment of the substrate is required. This includes determining coating compatibility, checking for adhesion of the existing coat, corrosion status, and moisture. Surface preparation is critical and may involve cleaning, degreasing, mechanical abrasion to create an appropriate surface profile, and removing deteriorated coatings. A recoat window or cure state must be respected. Coating selection considers service conditions (temperature, humidity, chemicals), substrate material, and compatibility with the existing layer. Application methods vary (brush, roller, spray) and film thickness is controlled to meet specification. After application, curing and ventilation are managed, followed by inspections for dry film thickness, holidays, and adhesion.

Recoating is common in marine, industrial, and civil projects. In marine contexts, it maintains hull and deck protection; in buildings, it protects concrete and metal structures; in manufacturing, it preserves equipment. Standards from bodies such as SSPC, NACE, ISO, and local regulations guide surface preparation, coating systems, and inspection. Safety considerations include exposure to solvents, fumes, and hazardous waste, as well as proper containment and disposal.
