While folkedrakt is a general category, bunad denotes the best-known modern form worn for celebrations and ceremonies, especially on Constitution Day, weddings, and other festive occasions.

Design and components: Most outfits include multiple pieces such as a blouse, bodice or jacket, skirt, and apron, plus accessories like belts, stockings, and shoes. Regional variations determine fabrics (wool, linen), colors, embroidery, and silver jewelry, including the traditional sølje and other brooches. The exact combination and decoration are typically specific to a region and sometimes to a village. The garments are commonly handmade, often reflecting long-standing textile techniques and patterns.

History and regional variation: Folk clothing originated in rural dress and evolved through the 18th and 19th centuries. The modern bunad movement arose in the late 19th century as part of the national romantic revival, later standardized by regional associations. Each region—for example Setesdal, Hardanger, Telemark, or Gudbrandsdal—has its own recognized set of motifs, cuts, and jewelry, which communicates local history and identity.
