Stockings are close-fitting leg coverings that extend from the feet to the knee or higher, and are held in place by elastic bands, garters, or modern stretch tops. They are distinct from socks, which typically extend to the calf.

Most stockings are made of nylon or a nylon blend, sometimes with elastane for stretch. They come in sheer or opaque varieties, with denier indicating thickness. Top sections may be lace, silk, or elasticized bands. Special constructions include reinforced toes, toe seams, and non-slip grips.

Stockings have been worn since ancient times; knitted leg coverings appeared in Europe in the Middle Ages. Silk stockings were common for elites. The 20th century saw nylon stockings introduced in 1939, transforming fashion; after World War II, garter belts and stockings remained popular, and pantyhose emerged later as a combined garment.

Variants include thigh-highs, knee-highs, stay-ups, fishnet, and patterned or textured styles. Toe options include reinforced toes and open toes.

In everyday wear, stockings provide style and warmth and can complement formal attire. Medical compression stockings are prescribed to support venous return and reduce swelling in certain conditions.

Care typically involves gentle washing, either by hand or on a delicate cycle, and air drying. Sizing is based on leg length, foot size, and denier; proper fit reduces runs and discomfort.
