Electronic systems refer to organized arrangements of electrical and electronic components that process, transmit, or convert electrical signals to perform specific functions. They are found in a wide range of devices, from consumer gadgets to industrial equipment, and encompass hardware and software that interact to control, measure, or communicate.

Typical building blocks include active devices such as transistors and diodes, passive components like resistors, capacitors, and inductors, as well as sensors, actuators, power supplies, and processing units such as microcontrollers, digital signal processors, or field-programmable gate arrays. These components are connected by printed circuit boards and interconnects, often with embedded firmware and software.

Environmental factors such as temperature, EMI, and thermal management are important, as are manufacturability and serviceability.
