A system on a chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit that consolidates the core components of a computer or electronic system onto a single substrate. An SoC typically includes a central processing unit (or multiple cores), memory (including cache and sometimes on-chip RAM), and various input/output interfaces and peripherals such as USB, Ethernet, display controllers, audio, and sometimes sensors. In modern designs, additional components such as a graphics processing unit (GPU), digital signal processors (DSPs), neural processing units (NPUs), and power management units are also integrated to support multimedia, AI, and real-time processing tasks.

Architecturally, SoCs can be broadly categorized as homogeneous or heterogeneous. Homogeneous designs rely on a uniform set of CPU cores, while heterogeneous designs combine different types of processing elements, such as high-performance cores, efficiency cores, GPUs, and specialized accelerators, to optimize power and performance. On-chip interconnects, such as buses, crossbars, or network-on-chip (NoC) fabrics, enable communication among components. SoCs also include security features, memory controllers, and sometimes analog components and sensors. Power management is a critical aspect, with regulators and switching controllers designed to maximize efficiency.

The SoC design process involves IP integration from multiple vendors, digital and analog design, verification, integration, and physical implementation, followed by fabrication in a semiconductor foundry. Process nodes range from ancient to cutting-edge, with leading devices manufactured at advanced nodes like 5 nanometers. Applications span smartphones, tablets, embedded devices, automotive systems, wearables, and data-center accelerators. Notable examples include mobile SoCs from Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek, as well as specialized SoCs used in single-board computers and automotive platforms. Trends in SoC development emphasize heterogeneous computing, AI acceleration, security enhancements, chiplet-based architectures, and advanced packaging.
