Dockhand is a term used for a general laborer who works on or near a dock or port, assisting with the handling of cargo and supplies. In seaports, inland docks, and marina facilities, dockhands support unloading and loading operations, help secure cargo, and move goods between ships, trucks, trains, and storage areas. Duties and titles vary by region, but the role is typically an entry-level position in maritime logistics.

Typical duties include guiding crane operators and forklift drivers, attaching and removing rigging, securing loads with ropes or straps, and performing basic inventory checks. They may assist with mooring and berthing, unload pallets and crates, and help spot hazards on the dock. Routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and work areas are common tasks.

Working conditions are physical and outdoors, with exposure to weather, water, noise, and heavy equipment. Shifts may be long and include nights, weekends, and holidays in round-the-clock port operations. Safety training is common, with PPE such as hard hats, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and steel-toe boots. Certifications for equipment operation, such as forklifts, or harbor-safety training, are often required by employers.
