Mooring is the practice of securing a vessel to a fixed point in the water, using lines or cables attached to anchors, buoys, or mooring structures. A moored vessel remains in place relative to fixed coordinates despite wind, current, and tides, without being tied to a dock.

Common arrangements include permanent seabed moorings, which use an anchor or pile connected to a length of chain or rope and a surface marker or buoy; floating moorings, which use a surface buoy with an underwater tether; and mooring buoys that mark a position and are connected to a submerged anchor or ballast. The main components are the seabed anchor or fixing, the rode (chain and/or synthetic line), hardware such as shackles or fittings, and a surface buoy or floats. Vessels are secured to the mooring with lines attached to cleats or deck fittings.

Operations typically involve approaching the mooring, attaching lines from the vessel to the mooring hardware, and adjusting length to maintain clearance from other vessels and structures. Care is taken to prevent chafing, and to allow slack for movement with waves. Regular inspections for wear, corrosion, and fouling are performed, and weather or tide conditions are considered when entering or leaving a mooring field. Maintenance may include replacing worn lines, inspecting anchors, and ensuring buoy lights and markers are functional.

Regulation and environment: Mooring areas are managed by local port authorities or harbor masters, with permits or mooring agreements often required. Moorings should minimize environmental impact, avoiding sensitive habitats and seabed damage. Safety concerns include entanglement, line failure, and vessel collision, so proper marking, lighting, and adherence to local rules are essential.
