Vessels

Vessel is a general term for any hollow container designed to hold or transport liquids or other substances. Everyday vessels include bowls, cups, jars, and pots. They are made from a range of materials such as ceramic, glass, metal, plastic, or wood, and vary in size and shape according to use, from storage and cooking to serving or scientific apparatus.

In biology, a blood vessel is part of the circulatory system that carries blood throughout the body. The main types are arteries, which carry blood away from the heart; veins, which return blood to the heart; and capillaries, tiny vessels where exchange with tissues occurs. Blood vessels have walls adapted to their function, and diseases such as atherosclerosis, aneurysms, and hypertension can impair flow.

In botany, vessels refer to conducting elements in the plant’s vascular system. Xylem vessels transport water and minerals from roots to shoots, while phloem vessels distribute sugars and other nutrients. Vessel elements align end-to-end to form continuous tubes and are distinguished by their relatively large lumens and perforated ends, helping to move fluids efficiently.

The term vessel is also used for ships and boats, especially in formal or legal contexts. A vessel can range from small craft to large ocean-going ships, and maritime law often refers to every seaworthy craft as a vessel.

In addition, the word may describe a ceremonial or sacred container, such as a holy vessel, or be used metaphorically to denote something that contains or channels a substance, idea, or function.
