An anchor is a device used to secure a vessel to the seabed, preventing it from drifting due to wind or currents. The basic principle involves using a heavy object with hooks that dig into the seabed when tension is applied to the anchor line. This connection allows ships and boats to remain stationary in a specific location.

There are various types of anchors designed for different conditions. The traditional admiralty anchor features a stock and two flukes that bury into the seabed. The plow anchor, shaped like a plowshare, works well in most bottom conditions. The Danforth anchor, with its two wide flukes, excels in sand and mud bottoms. Modern anchors like the Bruce combine features from different designs for versatility.

Proper anchoring technique requires selecting an appropriate anchor based on vessel size, seabed composition, and expected conditions. The anchor rode should have sufficient length, typically 5 to 7 times the water depth for overnight anchoring. Effective anchoring ensures the vessel remains secure while minimizing the risk of dragging or damage to the equipment.
