Bearcat is the common name for the binturong (Arctictis binturong), a medium-sized mammal in the civet family native to Southeast Asia. The animal has a stocky body, coarse fur that can range from dark brown to black, and a long, prehensile tail. The bearcat’s face has a bear-like appearance, contributing to its name. It is arboreal and nocturnal, using vocalizations and scent-marking to communicate. Its distinctive scent glands produce a popcorn-like odor.

Binturongs inhabit tropical forests from lowlands to foothills, often in dense vegetation and along rivers. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruit, leaves, small animals, insects, and carrion. They move through trees with strong, grasping limbs and a long tail that aids balance and support. Reproduction occurs mainly during fruiting seasons, with relatively slow breeding compared to many small mammals.

Conservation status: The binturong is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations in decline due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting for bushmeat and traditional medicines. It occurs primarily in protected areas and is subject to international trade restrictions. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and local community engagement.

Beyond the animal, Bearcat also refers to the Grumman F8F Bearcat, a World War II–era carrier-based fighter aircraft noted for high speed and maneuverability; it entered service with the U.S. Navy in the late 1940s and saw limited combat use before jets supplanted propeller-driven fighters.

In North American sports, Bearcat is the nickname of several teams, most prominently the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, whose mascot is inspired by the animal. The name reflects a historic, fan-driven association with tenacity and strength.
