Lowlands are geographic regions characterized by relatively low elevation compared with surrounding terrain. They are typically flat or gently rolling and occur as basins, plains, river valleys, deltas, or coastal plains. Soils are often alluvial or marine in origin, making these areas fertile and suitable for intensive agriculture and dense populations. Lowlands frequently host wetlands and floodplains, which influence hydrology and ecosystems.

Formation and characteristics: Lowland landscapes arise from processes such as sediment deposition by rivers, glacial outwash, tectonic subsidence, and coastal progradation. In coastal zones, sea level rise and tidal processes create estuaries, mangroves, and tidal flats. Inland, river floodplains accumulate sediments that replenish soils and sustain agriculture, while deltas form where rivers empty into larger bodies of water.

Global distribution and examples: The North European Plain and the European Low Countries cover much of northern Europe. In North America, substantial lowlands include parts of the Mississippi Valley and the Central Lowlands. Major river deltas and lowlands include the Nile Delta, the Ganges–Brahmaputra Delta, the Yangtze Delta, the Amazon Basin, and the Indus Plain. These regions are often linked with high population density and extensive economic activity.

Human use and management: Lowlands are among the most densely populated and cultivated regions due to fertile soils and access to waterways. Human activities include drainage, embankment construction, and irrigation to manage floods and reclaim land, but such interventions can alter ecosystems and cause subsidence, requiring ongoing management and adaptation.

Ecology and climate: Lowland ecosystems range from wetlands and riparian habitats to grasslands, depending on region and hydrology. Climate varies widely, influencing agriculture, biodiversity, and land use.
