Strategies combine deterrence with engagement. Deterrence relies on visible patrols, checkpoints, rapid response, and meaningful penalties. Surveillance technologies such as drones, satellite imagery, camera traps, GPS collars, and data analytics are increasingly used to track poaching hotspots and coordinate operations. Demand-reduction efforts address markets for wildlife products through awareness campaigns, retailer and consumer education, and legal restrictions on trade. Regional and cross-border cooperation enables information sharing and joint operations.

Community involvement is a common feature. Community rangers, benefit-sharing schemes, and livelihood alternatives aim to align local incentives with conservation goals while reducing human-wildlife conflict. Legal and policy frameworks, including national wildlife laws and international agreements like CITES, provide the basis for enforcement and prosecution. Funding comes from governments, international donors, NGOs, and private partners, with monitoring and evaluation to assess effectiveness.

Challenges include illicit networks, corruption, limited funding, challenging terrain, and the persistence of high-value demand. Effectiveness varies by region and species, with some populations stabilizing or recovering in well-supported programs, while others continue to decline.
