Benefit-sharing, also written as benefit-sharing or benefitsharing, refers to the allocation of the benefits arising from the use of resources, knowledge, or collaborative efforts to the groups or individuals who contribute to them. It is intended to ensure fairness and equity when resources are used commercially, scientifically, or culturally. The concept appears across biodiversity law, research collaborations, data ecosystems, and corporate governance.

In biodiversity and traditional knowledge contexts, benefit-sharing often arises under international frameworks such as the Nagoya Protocol. It requires parties to establish mechanisms that provide monetary or non-monetary benefits to source communities or countries when genetic resources or traditional knowledge are accessed or used for commercial purposes. Mechanisms include royalties, access fees, technology transfer, capacity building, and joint ventures.

In research and development, benefit-sharing agreements govern how results, profits, and technologies are distributed. These agreements may specify royalties, licensing terms, or upfront payments and may also include non-financial benefits like training, local employment, or infrastructure improvements.

In data and technology platforms, benefit-sharing can refer to fair access to data, equitable data governance, and revenue sharing from derivative products. Data trusts and other governance models aim to balance value creation with consent, transparency, and user or contributor rights.

Governance of benefit-sharing requires clear contracts, consent, documentation, and enforcement. Challenges include measuring benefits, aligning multiple stakeholders, jurisdictional differences, and power imbalances between resource providers and users. Critics argue it can be burdensome or tokenistic if not well designed, while proponents see it as essential for ethical and sustainable collaboration.
