Jurisdictional is an adjective describing anything related to jurisdiction—the official power to hear, decide, or enforce matters within a defined legal or political system. It concerns the scope, reach, and boundaries of authority assigned to courts, government agencies, or other authorities.

Within law, jurisdiction is commonly divided into categories. Subject-matter jurisdiction concerns the kinds of cases a court may hear; personal jurisdiction concerns the power over a person or entity; territorial or geographic jurisdiction concerns where the authority applies. Courts may have exclusive jurisdiction over certain matters, or concurrent jurisdiction where more than one court or authority can hear the case. Challenges to jurisdiction are routine; a party may file a motion to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction or to transfer a case to a different forum.

Jurisdictional questions also arise in administrative and international contexts. Agencies act within their statutory jurisdiction to regulate activities; jurisdictional boundaries can determine which regulator has authority. In cross-border matters, jurisdiction and applicable law affect forum shopping, recognition of judgments, and cooperation between states, and international tribunals weigh jurisdictional rules when determining admissibility.

Beyond formal law, the term can describe the limits of an organization’s power, such as municipal, state, or national jurisdiction over zoning, taxation, or public safety. Understanding jurisdictional boundaries clarifies where actions may be brought, which rules apply, and how authorities coordinate or conflict.
