Admissibility refers to the quality of being allowable under a set of rules or standards. In different disciplines, it describes whether a given item—be it a piece of evidence, a logical inference, a statistical estimator, or a strategic option—meets the criteria required by the field. The common idea is that something admissible is permissible within the framework, while something non-admissible is not.

In law, the admissibility of evidence concerns whether evidence may be presented to the fact-finder. Determination is governed by rules of evidence and procedure, which balance relevance and probative value against prejudice, confusion, or delay. Evidence must be relevant and properly authenticated; hearsay and other excluded categories may render evidence inadmissible. Judges decide admissibility, often subject to objections and appeal, and the ruling can shape the course of a trial or hearing.

In logic and philosophy of mathematics, admissibility describes whether a rule or inference is allowable within a formal system. An inference rule is admissible if adding it to the system does not enable deriving new theorems beyond those already derivable, or equivalently, if any proof using the rule can be transformed into a proof without it. Admissibility contrasts with derivability, which requires that conclusions be theorems of the system.

In statistics and decision theory, an estimator or decision rule is admissible if no other rule has uniformly lower risk. If such a dominating rule exists, the original is inadmissible. This concept guides the search for optimal procedures, with results like the James–Stein phenomenon showing that some intuitive estimators are inadmissible in higher dimensions under squared-error loss.

In game theory, an admissible strategy is one that is not strictly dominated by another strategy. In artificial intelligence, an admissible heuristic never overestimates the true cost to reach a goal, ensuring optimality for certain search algorithms. Across fields, admissibility helps formalize what counts as permissible or sound practice.
