Ajoteknologiaa, or driving technology, is a field of engineering focused on the design, development, integration and management of systems that enable, assist or automate the operation of road vehicles and other mobile machines. It covers propulsion, vehicle dynamics, sensing, perception, decision-making, actuation, human–machine interfaces and software architectures.

Core components include powertrains (internal combustion, electric and hybrid), control systems for steering, braking and suspension, and driver-assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and parking assistants.

Sensing and perception rely on cameras, lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors, often combined with GPS and map data. Sensor fusion, artificial intelligence and robust software architectures underpin decision-making and actuation. Connectivity technologies, including vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X), support coordinated safety and traffic efficiency. Software development emphasizes embedded systems, real-time operation, OTA updates and cybersecurity.

Applications span passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses and robotics for agriculture or industry, enabling safety improvements, fuel efficiency, predictive maintenance and fleet optimization. The field also includes autonomous driving research and deployment efforts at varying levels of automation, subject to regulatory approval and public acceptance.

Development is driven by advances in sensors, AI, and connectivity, while safety certification, validation in diverse scenarios, and liability and privacy considerations shape adoption.
