Weatherjudgment is the practice of evaluating weather information to inform decisions in planning, operations, and risk management. The term, a blend of weather and judgment, denotes the human interpretation and application of meteorological data rather than the raw forecasts alone. It encompasses recognizing the uncertainties inherent in weather predictions and translating them into actionable choices for individuals, organizations, and communities.

Methodologically, weatherjudgment combines data from weather models, surface observations, radar, and satellite data with probabilistic reasoning. It often uses ensemble forecast systems to assess the likelihoods of various weather scenarios and integrates domain-specific thresholds, risk tolerance, and operational constraints. Decision support tools, visualization methods, and scenario planning are commonly employed to communicate uncertainties and guide decisions.

Applications span multiple sectors. In agriculture, it informs irrigation and planting schedules; in aviation and shipping, it influences routing and scheduling; for outdoor events and construction, it helps determine timing and safety precautions; and in emergency management, it underpins preparedness and response planning.

Challenges include effectively communicating probabilistic information, avoiding overreliance on single-point forecasts, and mitigating cognitive biases in risk assessment. Ongoing research emphasizes better risk communication, user-centered design of tools, and transparent documentation of uncertainty.
