Uncertainty refers to the lack of complete certainty about the value of a quantity or the outcome of an event. It arises from two broad sources: variability inherent in systems (aleatory uncertainty) and incomplete knowledge or measurement error (epistemic uncertainty). In practice, total uncertainty reflects both natural randomness and limitations in models, data, and instrumentation.

Measurement and data collection introduce uncertainty through instrument precision, calibration errors, sampling variability, and data processing.

Quantifying uncertainty involves assigning a numerical description of possible values. Common measures include standard deviation and confidence intervals in frequentist analysis, or a full probability distribution in Bayesian analysis. Uncertainty can be propagated through calculations using error propagation, analytical rules, or Monte Carlo simulation to yield a distribution or interval for the final result.

Uncertainty is managed rather than eliminated. In decision making, analysts use risk assessment, sensitivity analysis, scenario planning, and robust or probabilistic design to accommodate uncertain outcomes.

In science and engineering, reporting uncertainties is standard practice: results are given with an estimated margin of error or a probability distribution. Weather forecasts, for example, express uncertainty as probabilities of precipitation; medical trials report confidence intervals; engineering tolerances specify allowable deviations.

Philosophically, some uncertainty is intrinsic to the world, while other uncertainty stems from limits of knowledge. Clear communication of uncertainty remains essential to avoid overconfidence and to support informed choices.
