Vraatgedrag

Vraatgedrag is a Dutch term that translates to “gnawing behavior” in English. It refers to the compulsive or habitual act of biting, chewing, or gnawing on objects, surfaces, or materials. This behavior is commonly observed in certain animal species, particularly rodents such as mice, rats, hamsters, and gerbils, as part of their natural instincts and physiological needs. In these animals, vraatgedrag serves several biological functions, including the maintenance of dental health, as their continuously growing incisors require regular wear. Additionally, gnawing helps animals explore their environment and reduce stress or boredom.

In domestic settings, vraatgedrag can sometimes become problematic if animals gnaw on inappropriate items like furniture, wiring, or household objects, leading to potential damage or safety hazards.
