Gerbils are small to medium-sized rodents in the subfamily Gerbillinae. The most commonly kept pet species is the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, native to deserts and semi-arid regions of Mongolia and northern China. In the wild they inhabit burrows and are adapted to dry environments, often surviving with limited water. They have a compact body, a long tail, and strong hind limbs used for jumping and running.

They are social animals, typically diurnal or crepuscular, and are active during the day and early evening. In captivity they commonly live in pairs or small groups, with introductions best done gradually and with care. They communicate through vocalizations and scent marking and rely on a combination of burrows, run space, and enrichment for mental and physical stimulation. Their tails help with balance and signaling, though they should be handled gently to avoid injury.

Diet consists mainly of seeds and grains, supplemented with vegetables and a constant supply of fresh water. A commercial rodent diet plus occasional greens is typical; avoid chocolate, caffeine, onions, garlic, and other foods that are toxic to rodents. In captivity, housing should provide a spacious cage with a solid bottom, appropriate bedding, a wheel for exercise, a nest box, and opportunities for digging or burrowing. Gerbils enjoy dust baths to maintain fur cleanliness.

Reproduction is common under proper conditions. Gestation lasts about 24-26 days, with litter sizes typically 4-9. Young are weaned at around 3-4 weeks. In captivity, lifespan is usually 3-4 years. Gerbils are not endangered and are widely kept as pets and in research settings.
