Managing is the activity of coordinating people, resources, and processes to achieve defined objectives within an organization or project. It encompasses planning, organizing, leading, and controlling to convert objectives into results. While closely related to leadership, managing emphasizes structure, systems, and accountability.

The concept emerged with early 20th-century theories such as Henri Fayol’s functions of management and Frederick Taylor’s scientific management. Over time the field has expanded to include strategic, operational, and human aspects across industries and scales.

Core functions: planning sets goals, assesses external and internal conditions, and designs the steps to reach targets. Organizing creates the structure, defines roles, and allocates resources. Leading involves communicating, motivating, and guiding people, shaping culture and ensuring collaboration. Controlling measures performance, compares it with standards, and implements corrective actions. Managers also make decisions, solve problems, and delegate authority.

Key skills include technical knowledge of the work, interpersonal or human skills to manage people, and conceptual or strategic thinking. Tools range from project management methodologies and performance dashboards to budgeting, risk assessment, and information systems. Common approaches include management by objectives, lean production, agile methods, and change management.

Contextual challenges include rapid technological change, globalization, remote and distributed work, diversity and inclusion, ethics, corporate governance, and sustainability. Effective management requires adapting processes to organization size, industry, and culture while aligning stakeholders and balancing short-term results with long-term viability.
