UFT

UFT, short for Unified Functional Testing, is a commercial automated functional testing tool developed for software applications and components. It originated as QuickTest Professional (QTP) by Mercury Interactive and was renamed to UFT after HP acquired Mercury. In the late 2010s, the product line was continued by Micro Focus, which introduced new branding such as UFT One and, separately, UFT Mobile, as part of the same platform.

UFT provides an integrated environment for creating and executing automated tests across multiple technologies. It features a keyword- and script-based framework, with VBScript as its primary scripting language. The tool emphasizes robust object recognition, Smart Identification for dealing with dynamic interfaces, and supports data-driven testing through external data sources. It is designed to automate functional and regression tests for enterprise applications across diverse technology stacks.

Supported technologies include web and Windows desktop applications, as well as enterprise platforms such as Java, .NET, SAP, Oracle, Siebel, PeopleSoft, and Oracle Forms, among others. UFT also offers integration with test management and reporting systems via Micro Focus ALM (formerly Quality Center), enabling traceability between requirements, tests, and defects. In addition, Micro Focus has positioned UFT within a broader ecosystem that includes UFT Mobile for mobile app testing and service-oriented testing capabilities through related tools.

As a proprietary tool, UFT requires licensing and is commonly used in large organizations with established test automation programs. It is praised for broad technology coverage and strong enterprise integration, while criticisms often focus on cost, licensing complexity, and the aging feel of the scripting language.
