Benefits include improved agility, easier integration, and clearer boundaries; drawbacks include governance complexity, potential performance overhead, and the need for robust service management and security.

Security and governance: Service orientation raises concerns about authentication, authorization, confidentiality, and auditability across service calls. Common practices include API gateways, OAuth, OpenID Connect, and WS-Security for SOAP, plus contract testing and service-level agreements.
