Tehdashallit

Tehdashallit (Finnish for "factory halls") are large industrial buildings used for manufacturing, assembly, and related activities. They are commonly part of industrial estates or logistics parks. A typical tehdashalli is a single- or multi-story space with a wide-open interior, high ceilings, and generous column spacing to accommodate heavy machinery and flexible production lines. Features often include loading docks, truck access, crane systems, and flat, durable floors designed for frequent forklift traffic and heavy loads.

Uses include production lines, fabrication, packaging, storage, and distribution. Some tehdashallit also house research and development labs or maintenance workshops. The building systems support operations: electrical power distribution, compressed air, water, ventilation and climate control, fire protection, and waste management.

Design emphasizes modularity and adaptability: demountable partitions, mezzanines, and reconfigurable utilities allow space to be repurposed as processes change. Structural frames are typically steel or reinforced concrete, with metal cladding and insulation suitable for climate and energy-efficiency goals. Modern practice often includes energy-saving features such as LED lighting, heat recovery, and integration with logistics networks (road, rail, ports).

Historically, tehdashallit evolved from early industrial warehouses into purpose-built production spaces. Today they are central to manufacturing and distribution, supporting flexible production and efficient supply chains in Finland and beyond.
