PhototypesettingÄra refers to a period in printing history when type was prepared photographically rather than with hot metal types. Spanning roughly from the 1950s to the early 1990s, it marked a transition from mechanical typesetting to photomechanical processes and prepress workflows.

In phototypesetting, operators input text on keyboards, selected fonts and sizes from a library, and produced photographic film negatives that depicted lines of type. The film was then used to produce printing plates. The method allowed faster layout changes, a wider range of typefaces, and improved control over spacing, justification, kerning, and hyphenation. It also facilitated more accessible multilingual typesetting and complex page designs compared with traditional hot metal methods.

Various systems and vendors supplied phototypesetting equipment, including uniterms that integrated text composition with image capture. Newspapers, magazines, and book publishers adopted these workflows to streamline production and enable more sophisticated layouts. The era also relied on chemical processing, quality control of film, and skilled operators to manage fonts, character sets, and damage-free reproduction of type and images.

The Phototypesetting Ära began to decline in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the rise of digital typesetting and desktop publishing, driven by PostScript-based workflows, affordable personal computers, and laser printers. As digital fonts and page-layout software matured, phototypesetting gradually gave way to entirely digital prepress and publishing practices, reshaping typography and print production for decades to come.
