Over the 18th and 19th centuries, newspapers expanded in literacy, literacy rates, and printing technology, leading to regular daily editions in many cities. By the 19th century, advertising supported the business model, enabling broader circulation. In the 20th century, investigative reporting and the rise of the modern press increased the newspaper’s role as a watchdog of government and business.

Editors oversee content selection and layout; reporters collect news, verify facts, and write stories, while critics and columnists provide analysis and opinion. Newspapers serve as a platform for public discourse, with letters to the editor, editorials, and opinion sections. Advertising remains a major revenue source alongside subscriptions.

Production involves reporting, editing, layout, printing, and distribution, historically via physical presses and carriers, now increasingly supplemented or replaced by online delivery, apps, and digital archives. Many papers introduced paywalls or memberships to monetize digital content, while others rely on advertising. The industry faces challenges from declining print circulation, competition from digital news platforms, and concerns about misinformation.

Different countries vary in press freedom and regulatory regimes, shaping editorial independence and accountability. Despite market changes, newspapers often remain important information sources and forums for public dialogue, even as readers increasingly turn to online platforms, social media, and aggregators.
