Billing cadence varies and commonly includes monthly, quarterly, or yearly intervals, with options for auto-renew and cancellation at any time. Pricing structures range from flat-rate to tiered (different feature sets), usage-based (paying for consumption), or hybrids. Trials and freemiums are often used to attract customers. Key metrics used to evaluate performance include monthly recurring revenue (MRR), annual recurring revenue (ARR), churn rate, customer lifetime value (LTV), and customer acquisition cost (CAC). Operational tasks involve renewals, proration, downgrades, upgrades, refunds, and handling failed payments.

Advantages of subscriptions include more predictable revenue, improved customer lifetime value, easier scaling, and opportunities for cross-sell and upsell. Challenges include customer churn, payment failures, cancellations, market competition, and the need to continuously deliver ongoing value to justify continued payments. Compliance considerations involve data protection, payment card industry standards, and clear terms of service, cancellation policies, and data privacy notices.
