Phloeomys

Phloeomys is a genus of rodents belonging to the family Muridae, commonly known as the giant tree rats or giant flying squirrels. These animals are native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The genus is notable for its arboreal lifestyle and distinctive physical adaptations suited for life in the canopy.

The most well-known species within this genus is Phloeomys cumingi, often referred to as the giant tree rat or giant cloud rat. This species is the largest rodent in the Philippines, with males reaching lengths of up to 1.2 meters (including the tail) and weighing around 4.5 kilograms. Its thick, woolly fur is typically dark brown or black, providing camouflage among the forest foliage. Phloeomys cumingi possesses a prehensile tail, which aids in climbing and balancing while navigating the treetops. Its large, rounded ears and prominent whiskers enhance its sensory capabilities in the dense forest environment.

Phloeomys cumingi is primarily a herbivore, feeding on leaves, fruits, and bark. Its diet contributes to seed dispersal, playing a role in the ecological balance of its habitat.
