Periferik

Periferik is a Turkish adjective meaning related to the periphery or situated at the edge of something. It is used to describe components, regions, or processes that are not central or core. The term denotes position at or near the boundary of a system and is commonly contrasted with merkezi or santral, meaning central.

In computing, periferik cihazlar (peripheral devices) refer to hardware that connects to a computer but is not part of its core architecture. Examples include keyboards, mice, printers, external storage, and scanners. The term also covers peripheral ports and interfaces such as USB. In Turkish, periferik devices are often described as harici (external), though the emphasis is on edge position rather than centrality.

In medicine and biology, periferik describes structures outside the central body systems. The peripheral nervous system (periferik sinir sistemi) contrasts with the central nervous system (merkezi sinir sistemi). Peripheral blood, peripheral tissues, and peripheral vessels refer to parts away from a central axis or organ. The term is common in clinical notes, anatomy textbooks, and pharmacology when distinguishing local and systemic processes.

Usage notes: while "periferik" often conveys edge or outer position, its exact meaning varies by field. In everyday Turkish, it can simply mean "outlying" or "on the edge" and does not imply a judgment about importance.
