Paneltypes

Paneltypes is a generalized term used in technical contexts to refer to the taxonomy of panels—distinct families or categories defined by purpose, material, size, and mounting. It is not a formal standardized term, but a convention used in documentation, product catalogs, and design systems to group similar panel-based components.

In solar technology, panel types describe photovoltaic modules. Common categories include monocrystalline panels, known for higher efficiency and a uniform appearance; polycrystalline panels, typically lower cost with slightly lower efficiency; and thin-film panels, which can offer flexible form factors and different performance profiles in certain conditions. Selection depends on available space, climate, and budget.

In software and user interfaces, panel types denote container-like UI elements such as side panels, bottom panels, tool panels, property panels, and modal panels. Differences focus on modality (persistent versus temporary), docking behavior (dockable, floating, or attached), and interaction features (resizing, collapsing).

In construction and interior design, panel types cover wall and ceiling panels made from materials such as wood, plywood, MDF, metal, or composites. Variants include decorative panels for aesthetics, acoustic panels for sound control, and protective cladding. Mounting methods include tongue-and-groove, screw-fastened sheets, or interlocking systems.

In additional domains, instrument panels and control panels in vehicles and industrial equipment illustrate another axis of paneltypes, differentiated by layout, material, and integration with larger enclosures or dashboards. The term serves as a convenient shorthand for organizing a diverse set of panel-based components.
