Mounting

Mounting is the act of attaching, securing, or placing an object on a support or within a frame, or gaining a position of readiness for use or operation. It can refer to physical attachment, or to the process of becoming mounted, such as a rider getting onto a horse or a device being prepared for use.

In computing and information technology, mounting is the process of attaching a storage device or filesystem so that its files appear in the system's directory hierarchy. A mount point, device identification, and filesystem type are involved. The operating system uses mount and umount commands to attach and detach resources. Proper permissions, alignment, and unmounting before removal are important to prevent data loss.

In hardware and optics, mounting describes attaching components to a frame, chassis, or optical interface. Examples include mounting a lens to a camera body, securing a sensor to a PCB, or installing displays and panels in devices. Mounts are designed to standards or tolerances to ensure alignment, stability, and serviceability.

In microscopy and biology, mounting refers to placing a specimen on a slide with mounting medium and sealing it with a cover slip to preserve it and improve optical properties for observation.

In art, exhibition, and theater, mounting can refer to the preparation and presentation of works or a production, including affixing labels, framing, or installing sets and lighting.

Across applications, mounting requires attention to weight, balance, alignment, and environmental factors to ensure safety and reliability. Improper mounting can cause mechanical failure, data loss, or safety hazards.
