PEbeschichtete, or PE-coated, refers to substrates that have a polyethylene coating applied to improve surface properties. The coating increases moisture and grease resistance, chemical resistance, and overall barrier performance, and can enhance heat sealing and surface smoothness. Coatings are typically applied by extrusion coating or lamination with polyethylene film. The polyethylene may be LDPE, MDPE, or HDPE, chosen for flexibility, temperature tolerance, and sealing requirements.

Common substrates include paper and cardboard used in packaging, textiles (woven and nonwoven fabrics) for protective or waterproof finishes, and metal surfaces such as steel or aluminum for corrosion protection or food-contact linings. PE coatings can be transparent or pigmented and are often combined with additional laminates or coatings to tailor barrier properties, surface energy, or mechanical strength.

Applications span packaging, where PE-coated papers and boards provide moisture and grease barriers for bakery papers, cartons, and liners; consumer textiles for rainwear and protective fabrics; and industrial uses such as coated papers for insulation or moisture barriers. The coating is usually bonded to the substrate through extrusion coating or adhesive lamination, with surface pretreatments such as corona or plasma used to improve adhesion. Some PE-coated products are designed for recyclability, but multilayer configurations can complicate recycling streams.

Regulatory and safety considerations apply when PE coatings are used in contact with food. Compliance with relevant regulations for food-contact materials (for example, European Union and United States guidelines) is typically required to ensure limit migrations and material safety.
