Maskinkonstruktör is a professional who designs machines and mechanical systems. In Swedish industry, the role combines engineering analysis with considerations of manufacturability, assembly, and operation. The primary objective is to create reliable, cost-effective equipment that fulfills functional requirements while meeting safety and regulatory standards.

Typical responsibilities include concept development, creating 3D CAD models and technical drawings, and producing bill of materials. They select materials and components, specify tolerances and assembly sequences, and coordinate with suppliers and production teams. Maskinkonstruktörer perform tolerance analysis and may use simulations (such as finite element methods or computational fluid dynamics) to validate designs. They document designs, support testing and prototyping, and participate in risk assessment and compliance activities, including adherence to ISO standards and CE marking. They also contribute to installation, commissioning, and ongoing optimization of machines in operation.

Education and skills commonly required include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, or vocational education with substantial CAD experience. Proficiency in CAD software (for example SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or AutoCAD), knowledge of manufacturing processes, and an understanding of control systems and automation are important. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities are essential, as is familiarity with GD&T, FMEA, and safety standards.

Maskinkonstruktörer work across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, packaging, robotics, and energy. They collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers, machinists, and suppliers, and with experience can advance to senior design engineer, project engineer, design manager, or consultancy roles.
