Heckklappen

Heckklappen are the rear doors of motor vehicles that provide access to the cargo area. In German automotive terminology, the term is commonly used for hatchbacks, station wagons, SUVs and crossovers, where the rear opening is part of a single hinged door. It is distinct from a separate trunk lid (Kofferraumdeckel) found on traditional sedans.

Most Heckklappen are top-hinged and lift upward, supported by gas springs, torsion bars, or electric motors. Some designs use side-hinged or two-piece configurations, such as split tailgates that allow access to the cargo area without fully opening the door. Modern vehicles increasingly offer powered liftgates with hands-free operation, auto-close functions, and sensors to detect obstacles or pinch points.

Common features integrated into Heckklappen include a rear window or glass hatch, wiper equipment on some models, and built-in lighting or cargo handles. Many models also allow customizing the opening height to accommodate garages or parking restrictions. Seals around the edge provide weather protection and security, while latching mechanisms ensure the door remains closed during driving.

Safety and maintenance considerations focus on proper alignment and secure latching to prevent leaks and ensure reliable operation. Misalignment can cause water intrusion, hood or door interference, and unreliable closure. Regular inspection of hinges, seals, and actuators helps prevent premature wear. In addition to mechanical aspects, electronic liftgate systems may require software updates or battery checks to maintain full functionality.
