Tailgate is a term with two common meanings. The first refers to the hinged rear door of a vehicle such as a pickup truck or SUV, which lowers to give access to the cargo area. The second meaning describes a social gathering held around the tailgate of a parked vehicle, most often in a stadium parking lot before sporting events or concerts, where attendees tailgate with food, drinks, and sometimes grills.

Vehicle tailgates vary in design. They are typically attached by hinges at the bottom edge of the rear opening and may be supported by gas struts. Some tailgates swing down to create a step or work surface; others open to the side or can be removed entirely. Many tailgates are lockable and include features such as integrated steps or loading assist devices. Tailgates are designed to bear weight within specified limits and are part of the vehicle's cargo system.

Tailgate parties commonly include grilling, food sharing, games, and socializing; equipment often includes portable grills, coolers, camping chairs, and canopies. They are most closely associated with football games in North America but occur at concerts, races, and other events. Some venues regulate alcohol, noise, parking, safety, and waste disposal; hosts are encouraged to follow local laws and practice responsible consumption and cleanup.

Safety and etiquette: In traffic, “tailgating” refers to following another vehicle too closely, a dangerous and illegal behavior in many jurisdictions. This use is distinct from the parking-lot tailgating phenomenon and pertains to road safety rather than social gatherings.
