An SUV, or sport utility vehicle, is a vehicle designed to combine passenger comfort with the ability to handle varied road conditions and light off-road use. SUVs typically offer a higher seating position, substantial cargo space, and a higher ride height than most traditional cars. They may be built on body-on-frame platforms with four-wheel drive or on unibody platforms as part of the crossover category. Modern SUVs often emphasize on-road comfort and efficiency but retain towing capacity and off-road capability to some degree.

Historically, the concept originated with rugged, truck-based models such as the Jeep Wagoneer and Ford Bronco, and the term sport utility vehicle became common in the late 20th century as manufacturers expanded the class. Since the 2000s, many SUVs have moved to unibody construction shared with passenger cars, which improves ride quality and efficiency and has contributed to the blending of SUVs with crossovers.

SUVs come in a range of sizes, including compact, mid-size, and full-size, with configurations such as two-row or three-row seating. They may be powered by gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or full electric drivetrains. Market offerings include mainstream and luxury variants, as well as performance-oriented or off-road-focused models with features like all-wheel drive, locking differentials, and raised ground clearance.

Common considerations for buyers include cargo capacity, seating flexibility, towing capacity, fuel economy, purchase price, and anticipated use. Safety technologies such as electronic stability control, advanced driver-assistance systems, and multiple airbags are often standard or optional.
