Drivermodeller

Drivermodeller is a software concept used to construct computational representations of human driver behavior for use in traffic simulations, autonomous vehicle testing, and safety analysis. A drivermodeller abstracts how drivers perceive the environment, decide on actions, and execute controls, translating inputs such as vehicle state, road geometry, traffic conditions, and individual driver traits into driving actions or driving traces. The aim is to reproduce realistic traffic dynamics and driver diversity within a simulation.

Approaches to drivermodelling include rule-based models, statistical models, and data-driven methods based on machine learning or reinforcement learning. Traditional car-following and lane-change models (for example, the Intelligent Driver Model and related formulations) provide analytical baselines, while data-driven drivermodeller methods learn patterns from observed driving data to capture variability in reaction times, gap acceptance, and risk willingness.

Inputs typically include vehicle dynamics, sensor data, road and weather conditions, traffic density, and demographic or behavioral descriptors of drivers. Outputs are action choices such as acceleration, braking, steering, lane changes, and speed profiles, as well as higher-level driving traces used in scenario generation.

Applications span traffic flow studies, urban planning, calibration of autonomous driving systems, and the generation of realistic test scenarios for safety validation. Implementation considerations include model calibration, validation against real-world data, computational efficiency, and privacy concerns in data collection. Challenges involve capturing the wide variability of human behavior, ensuring transferability across contexts, and avoiding bias in data sets.
