Intelligent is an adjective describing the ability to learn, understand, and apply knowledge, or to demonstrate high mental capacity in tasks such as reasoning, problem solving, or language use. It can describe humans, animals, or machines that exhibit such cognitive performance. In everyday language, intelligent often implies adaptability and effective judgment in unfamiliar situations.

Etymology: Intelligent derives from late Latin intelligent-, from intelligere meaning “to understand,” with the agentive suffix -ent. The root intellig- is related to perception, comprehension, and choosing or discerning.

In psychology and cognitive science, intelligence refers to a range of cognitive abilities. The adjective intelligent is used to describe outcomes or agents that display those abilities. There is ongoing debate about the nature and measurement of intelligence, with theories ranging from a single general factor (the g factor) to multiple intelligences or domains of ability. Assessments such as IQ tests seek to quantify certain cognitive functions, but they do not capture all components of intelligence and are subject to cultural and methodological criticisms.

In artificial intelligence, intelligent systems or agents are designed to perceive their environment, reason about it, learn from data, and act to achieve goals.
