DIlaitteet is a term used to describe a family of modular, open-hardware electronic devices designed for education, prototyping, and hobbyist use. The design emphasizes user-replaceable modules, open specifications, and community-driven development to enable customization and repair.

Origin and etymology: The exact origin is unclear; the name is often said to derive from the Finnish word laitteet (devices) or to be an acronym used in online maker communities in the 2010s. Regardless of its roots, the concept spread through open hardware forums and DIY electronics sites.

Design and architecture: A DIlaitteet system typically centers on a small core processing board that interfaces with a suite of plug-in modules via standardized connectors (for example, visible in robust I/O and power buses). Modules provide capabilities such as sensing, actuation, display, wireless or wired communication, and power management. All hardware designs are usually released with open schematics and bill of materials, and the firmware and software are distributed under permissive licenses.
