Computeronmodule

Computer-on-module (COM) is a compact, self-contained computing module designed to be integrated into an embedded system by mounting it on a carrier or baseboard. A COM usually includes a central processing unit, memory, and basic I/O and often graphics, storage interfaces, and security features; it relies on the carrier board for power delivery, external connectivity, and system-level peripherals. This separation allows the module to be tested and upgraded independently from the host system, extending product lifecycles and simplifying design.

Several families of COM standards exist, with common form factors and pinouts that enable interchangeability within a family. Notable examples include COM Express, Qseven, SMARC, ETX and, more recently, COM-HPC for higher performance. Modules may be based on x86, ARM, PowerPC, or other architectures and typically run Linux, Windows, or various real-time operating systems. They may include integrated GPUs, hardware video encoders, or secure boot features.

The carrier board provides I/O, memory expansion, storage interfaces, and peripherals such as Ethernet, USB, CAN, PCIe, SATA, displays, and serial links. Common applications include industrial automation, medical devices, automotive infotainment and diagnostics, aerospace, and digital signage. Advantages of the COM approach include rapid integration, scalable performance, reduced development risk, easier thermal management, and long product lifecycles suitable for regulated markets.

The ecosystem emphasizes long-term availability, robust environmental specifications (industrial temperatures), and support tools for board bring-up, middleware, and deployment. The terms COM and computer-on-module are often used interchangeably, though vendors may distinguish between module and carrier board offerings.
