Baseboard, also known as skirting board in some regions, is a molding that runs along the bottom edge of interior walls. It covers the joint between wall and floor, conceals the expansion gap left for flooring, and helps protect walls from kicks, scuffs, and furniture. Baseboards come in a range of profiles and heights to suit different architectural styles and room functions.

Materials commonly used for baseboards include wood (softwood such as pine and hardwood such as oak), engineered options like medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and moisture-resistant plastics such as vinyl or PVC. Finishes vary from natural wood stains to paints and veneers. Baseboards can be solid or constructed from composite materials, with vinyl or PVC often favored in bathrooms or basements for their moisture resistance.

Designs range from simple flat boards to profiles with curves, bevels, or ornate detailing. Heights typically span from about 3 to 5 inches in many homes, though taller profiles (6 to 8 inches or more) are used in formal spaces. The choice of profile influences the room’s character and how it interacts with door casings, wainscoting, and other millwork.

Installation usually occurs after drywall and flooring are in place. Baseboards are attached with nails or adhesive, and mitred at corners. A small expansion gap along the floor is left, which is then sealed with caulk and touch-up paint or stain. Maintenance involves cleaning and occasional repainting or re-staining; damaged sections can be replaced or patched.
