Geology and formation: Coastalhighlands commonly arise from tectonic uplift at continental margins, volcanism, or long-term crustal deformation. Erosion shapes cliffs and terraces, while shoreline processes interact with river systems and inland drainage, creating gradients from headlands to foothill valleys.

Climate and hydrology: Climate varies with latitude and exposure, but marine influence generally moderates temperatures. Orographic rainfall on windward slopes supports lush forests, while drier leeward areas may occur. Fog and cloud cover are frequent in tropical or temperate highland zones.
