Bulldogs

Bulldogs are a family of medium-sized dogs known for their muscular build, broad shoulders, and a characteristic brachycephalic face with a short muzzle and heavy wrinkles. The term most often refers to the English Bulldog, but other breeds such as the French Bulldog and American Bulldog are commonly described as bulldogs in everyday language.

English bulldogs usually stand 14–16 inches tall and weigh 40–50 pounds. They have a short coat, loose facial skin, a broad chest, and a distinctive low, rolling gait. They are generally low-energy and kept mainly as companion animals, though they require regular care to avoid overheating and obesity.

Historically developed in Britain for bull-baiting, bulldogs were bred to be strong and tenacious. After bull-baiting was outlawed, their temperament was refined for family companionship, and they became popular in urban settings. They are recognized by major kennel clubs, though breed standards emphasize their unique craniofacial structure.

Temperament tends to be affectionate, loyal, and good with families when properly socialized. They can be tolerant of children but may be stubborn and benefit from positive, consistent training. They usually prefer a calm daily routine and short walks.

Health and care: bulldogs are prone to brachycephalic airway syndrome, heat sensitivity, dental problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, skin infections in facial folds, and eye conditions. Responsible care includes regular veterinary checkups, weight management, cleaning of the facial folds, dental hygiene, and climate-appropriate exercise. Breeding practices that prioritize health and genetic diversity are important, and many bulldogs come from rescue organizations or adoption programs.
