Álcázás is the practice of concealing or disguising characteristic features of a person, object, or activity to avoid detection. It includes methods that reduce visibility, obscure shapes, or mask signals that might reveal intent. Álcázás is used in military, wildlife observation, theatre, fashion, and information security.

The term derives from the Hungarian word álca, meaning mask or disguise, with the suffix -zás indicating a process. The concept covers both passive concealment and active deception, where appearance or signals are altered to mislead observers or blend into the surrounding environment.

Visual camouflage methods include color matching to the background, disruptive patterns that break outlines, and texture matching. Equipment such as camouflage clothing, nets, paint, and netting is used to reduce detection. In three dimensions, managing shape and material helps conceal size and form. Special implements like ghillie suits or camouflaged concealment devices are employed in operational settings.

Behavioral camouflage uses movement, posture, and timing to avoid detection. Examples include choosing concealed routes, suppressing noise, and moving when observers are unlikely to notice. Behavioral cues such as stance or reflective surfaces can reveal intent, so minimizing such cues is part of al–cázási practice.

Applications span several fields. In wildlife biology, camouflaging patterns help prey avoid predators. In the military, camouflage protects personnel and equipment. In design and fashion, camouflage prints may serve aesthetic or branding purposes. In information security, deception techniques such as decoys and misleading signals relate to camouflage by misdirecting observation or interpretation.

Historically, ideas of concealment appear in hunting and warfare, with modern systematic camouflage developing in the 20th century. World War I accelerated experimentation with color schemes and disguises, followed by more advanced patterns in subsequent decades. The field continues to evolve with new materials and technologies.
