Predators are organisms that hunt and consume other living organisms, playing a central role in ecosystems. Predation regulates prey populations, influences food-web dynamics, and can shape the behavior and distribution of species. Predators span a wide range of forms, from microscopic protists to large mammals and birds. Within ecosystems they occupy various trophic positions, including apex predators that sit at the top of the food chain and mesopredators that influence communities from mid-level positions.

Predators use a variety of hunting strategies, such as pursuit, stalking, ambush, and cooperative or pack hunting. They rely on specialized adaptations for locating and capturing prey, including keen senses (vision, hearing, smell), speed and agility, camouflage, teeth and claws, and sometimes venom or tool use. Some predators are generalists, taking a broad range of prey, while others are highly specialized to particular prey species.

Ecologically, predators can regulate population sizes, prevent the overabundance of certain species, and contribute to biodiversity through indirect effects. Predator-prey interactions can drive evolutionary changes in prey defenses and predator offenses, a process known as coevolution. Apex predators often have outsized influence, with their presence affecting the structure of entire communities.

Humans interact with predators in multiple ways: some species are valued for ecological services or cultural significance, while others are viewed as threats to livestock, game, or human safety. Conservation challenges include habitat loss, reduced prey availability, and hunting or bycatch. Effective management combines habitat protection, prey conservation, and conflict-mitigation strategies.
