Twillbacked is a textile construction in which a twill weave forms the visible face of the fabric and a backing layer is bonded to the reverse side. The backing provides dimensional stability, resistance to stretching, and, in some cases, moisture barriers or added stiffness. The term is often written as twill-backed.

Construction methods vary. The backing can be applied after weaving through lamination or coating, or it can be attached during production by bonding an auxiliary fabric, such as cotton or polyester, or a polymer film to the twill fabric. Bonding methods include adhesive, heat, or mechanical interlocking. Backings are chosen based on the intended end use, cost, and desired properties such as stiffness, water resistance, or texture.

Common applications include upholstery and furniture fabrics, automotive interiors, luggage and bags, heavy-duty jackets, and carpet backings. In each case, the twill face provides a durable, diagonally ribbed surface with good drape, while the backing enhances stability, wear resistance, and often the surface finish of the reverse side.

Properties and considerations vary with the backing material. The combination typically yields increased abrasion resistance and dimensional stability but can add weight and alter hand and drape. Care requirements depend on the backing and surface fiber; certain backings may react to solvents, high heat, or aggressive cleaning methods. As with many composite textiles, twillbacked fabrics are selected to balance performance, feel, and cost for specific applications.
