Textureauthoring is the process of creating textures that define the visual appearance of surfaces in 3D graphics. It encompasses 2D image textures and procedural textures, used to simulate skin, metal, wood, fabric, and other materials. It is a fundamental part of material creation in games, film, architecture, and visualization.

Textures are combined with material models. In physically based rendering, several maps describe surface properties: albedo/diffuse, normal or bump maps, height maps, roughness or glossiness, metallic maps, ambient occlusion, and emissive maps. Some workflows also use specular, subsurface scattering, or sheen. Textures can be painted by hand or generated procedurally.

Typical workflow includes UV unwrapping and layout, painting and sculpting textures in software such as Substance Painter, Mari, Blender, or Photoshop, or generating procedural textures in node-based tools like Substance Designer, Blender's node editor, or Houdini. Baking workflows transfer details from high-poly to low-poly meshes, producing normal maps, ambient occlusion, curvature, and cavity maps.

Output and integration: textures are exported in formats like PNG, TIFF, EXR, or DDS, with attention to resolution, mipmapping, and color management. Texture atlases and proper tiling help optimize performance. Artists often iterate with previews in target engines (Unity, Unreal, or proprietary renderers).

Challenges include achieving seamless tiling, color consistency across devices, balancing resolution and memory use, and ensuring consistent PBR material behavior under different lighting. Emerging trends include procedural texture authoring, photogrammetry-based textures, and AI-assisted texture creation.
